Below are some of the best entrepreneur books to read when you’re looking for a boost of inspiration or guidance.

1. The 10X Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure

Quick Overview:

What does it take to achieve success? Many people think they need a better workplace, equipment or avenues of support. What if the only thing standing in the way of your success is you?

With The 10X Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure, entrepreneur Grant Cardone provides readers with strategies and insights on how to create not just an ordinary life but a happier one, too. He takes us through what needs to be changed mentally as well as how we approach work–his own included.

Everyone has a pretty good idea of what it means to work hard. But as you climb the corporate ladder, there comes a time when you have to take consecutive steps upwards in order to move the needle on your career.

This is why many people find that after they hit their stride, they settle into a 9-5 routine with barely any noticeable upward mobility (or if there was then it wasn’t sustainable) because “working smart” requires more work than “working hard.”

Key Takeaways:

Do you want to find out why some people succeed while others don’t? What does it take to become an exceptional person in your field? Have you ever wondered how other people consistently get what they want from life and the world, while others seem doomed to repeat their mistakes again and again?

The 10X Rule reveals that there are actually only 10% of people who win in any competitive environment. These rare individuals have discovered a hidden power that takes them beyond “time management” or “task management.” It’s not about how much they can do – but how radically the way they think about it.

2. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Quick Overview:

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a self-development book that aims to help people improve their personal and professional lives through increased efficiency and focus. Written by Stephen Covey, it was first published in 1989.

The premise of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is to examine seven universal roles that successful people understand at an instinctive level – areas where they are constantly “acting” or living their private lives, their professional lives, conducting themselves ethically in society.

Ultimately, all of these discoveries come down to one fact: People tend to be greatly influenced by their environment. That’s why changing your environment is the best way, and sometimes the only way, for you to change.

3. Shoe Dog

This engrossing memoir by Nike’s founder and CEO talks about how he helped transform a small company into the iconic empire it is today and serves as a powerful inspiration for entrepreneurs in a range of industries.

Shoe Dog is an inspirational story of overcoming challenges to grow a company as fast as possible. You’ll learn real-world business lessons that only Nike’s founder can teach you.

It is an interesting journey, full of struggle and problems, but also full of hope and victories. Knight distributes small morsels of wisdom throughout the chapters.

4. How to Win Friends and Influence People

Are you interested in self-improvement and becoming a better leader?  This book was one of the first best-selling self-help books ever published. It was published more than 80 years ago and it is still relevant today. It is full of practical instructions on how to handle people, win friends, bring people to your way of thinking and how to be a great leader.

3 top takeaway points for start-ups:

  1. Talk about your own mistakes before criticising the other person. When something goes wrong, taking responsibility can help win others over to take your side. People do not like to shoulder all the blame and taking credit for mistakes helps to remove the sting from our critiques of others.
  2. Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view. Other people may often be wrong, but we cannot condemn them. We must seek to understand them. Success in dealing with people requires a sympathetic grasp of the other person’s viewpoint.
  3. Dramatise your ideas. In this fast-paced world, simply stating a truth isn’t enough. The truth must be made vivid, interesting, and dramatic. Television has been doing it for years. Sometimes ideas are not enough and we must dramatise them.

5. The Power of Habit

Charles Duhigg’s “The Power of Habit” brings a very interesting concept to the table: that the key to achieving the success you crave in any aspect of your life, personal or professional, is understanding how habits are formed, and how they work.

This book uses psychology and extremely interesting real-life case studies to illustrate the power that habits have over us and our success, and the best part – how to change those habits.

The best part about this book is how it can help an incredibly vast audience. It can help you understand yourself better, why you’ve formed the habits you have, and how to make improvements to your lifestyle. It’s also great for businesses and entrepreneurs, as it shows how you can achieve success simply by focusing on habits.

6. Hyper Focus

Chris Bailey ran a year-long productivity project where he conducted intensive research, as well as dozens of productivity experiments on himself, to discover how to become as productive as possible. To date, he has written hundreds of articles on the subject and has garnered coverage in the media as diverse as the New York Times, Huffington Post, New York magazine, Harvard Business Review, TED, Fast Company and Lifehacker.

In Hyperfocus, Chris Bailey offers a practical guide for how to work smarter in our distracting world. This book will teach you how to work fewer hours but achieve more, why sometimes tiredness is the key to creativity, and lots of ways to harness your attention span and be more productive with your time.

7. The Obstacle Is the Way

This book explores the timeless philosophy: You don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been. By analysing various historical figures through time that have experienced notable success, the book shows readers how to turn adversity into an opportunity.

“If the competition threatens you, it’s time to be fearless, to display your courage.”

8. Outliers

In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell asks: why do some people achieve so much more than others? Through studying some of the world’s highest achievers – from rock stars to runners, tech-geniuses to scientists – Gladwell learns that success is just as much about where we come from as who we are.

Mr writes that success is a marriage between opportunity and time. He shows with real examples that it takes approximately 10.000 hours to master something. He shows you how cultural habits from hundreds of years ago still can play a role in your success.

Recommendations from Our Team

Gosia – PA to Vindicta’s Founder & CEO and a Digital Marketing Assitant

The book that I can really recommend for everyone and not just entrepreneurs is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

Think & Grow Rich is probably the number 1 most famous success book of all time. It was written by Napoleon Hill in 1937 and has sold over 15 million copies. For me, this book showed me how important our thoughts really become.

A good example of the power of thoughts is the placebo effect. If you are ill and take real medication (e.g. pills with actual painkillers), then of course you will get better. Yet, if you’re ill and get pseudo medication (e.g. pills with sugar and water), you will also get better. Why is that? It’s because you think you got real medication. You think that this medication will help you and because you think that, it’s what actually happens.

If we THINK we will get better, then we will get better (even if all we do is swallow sugar pills).

Keeping this constantly in mind is really important, because if thoughts become things, if thoughts become our reality, then we should start paying much more attention to what we’re thinking all the time.

If we think “failure”, then failure will be transmuted into reality. If we think “success”, then success will be transmuted into reality. This concept is the cornerstone of Napoleon Hill’s philosophy.

Ryan – Director of Video Content

The book recommendation from Ryan is Crucial Conversations – Tools for Talking When Stakes are High.

Becoming effective at handling high-stakes conversations, or crucial conversations can make work and your life, in general, a lot easier.

Humans communicate all the time but the higher the stakes, the less likely you will handle a conversation effectively. This could be because you’re used to communicating in everyday low-stakes exchanges so you have become less attentive and more automatic with your responses.

In high-stakes conversations, you must be mindful of everything involved in the communication, such as thoughts, emotions, words, voices, facial expressions and behaviours.

Also, in these situations, the stress response is likely to be triggered and the effects of this can hinder your communication e.g. your voices and facial expressions become harder to control, it’s more difficult to structure thoughts, your breathing rate increases etc.

Get inspired to take the next step

Starting a business requires a certain level of fearlessness and determination, and reading motivational books like these are a great first step on your journey toward entrepreneurship. The best entrepreneur books can also be essential resources as your company ages.
